Kilimanjaro
Tanzania, Africa
5 895m
Expedition Length : 6-7 Days
Usual Cost : 3 000$
Climbing Season : December/March - June/October
Accessibility : Easy
Technicality : Easy (Hiking)
Waste Exposure : High (A lot of summiters throughout the year.)
Waste Management : Medium
The wastes are well managed at camp, with transportable toilets and foods transported with biodegradable means.
The main issue on this summit will be the human waste management outside of the camps (some summiters talk about a « Sea of a thousands turds » near the summit). The use of a « Wag bag » should be adopted by the summiters, and will be during this project.
Another issue will emerge regarding the porters. It seems that the porters climb between camps at different hours from the main group, and their behavior regarding the waste on the mountain can be judged as poor. This will need to be discuss with the Guide and his team.
